Maurice André (1933–2012) was a renowned French trumpeter celebrated for his exceptional technique, brilliant tone, and pioneering work in elevating the trumpet—particularly the piccolo trumpet—as a solo concert instrument. After working as a coal miner in his youth, he entered the Paris Conservatory in 1951 and won top awards in cornet and trumpet. His career took off after winning the 1963 Munich International Competition. Specializing in Baroque music, André also expanded the trumpet repertoire by transcribing works for other instruments and inspiring new compositions from contemporary composers. By his retirement in 2004, he had made over 300 recordings.
