María de Buenos Aires (1968), a tango operita by Astor Piazzolla with a libretto by Horacio Ferrer, is a landmark of nuevo tango, blending tango with classical, jazz, and avant-garde elements. The surreal story follows María, born in the slums “when God was drunk,” who becomes a tango singer and symbol of passion and suffering. After her death, her shadow roams Buenos Aires’ underworld, encountering fantastical figures like the Duende and choruses of workers and thieves. Richly scored for bandoneon, piano, violin, and voice, the work explores identity, femininity, and rebirth, ultimately embodying Buenos Aires itself through tango’s haunting intensity.

Filippo Arlia (b. 1989) is an Italian pianist, conductor, and artistic director acclaimed as one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. A piano graduate at 17 with top honors, he later earned a law degree. Arlia has led over 500 concerts in more than 30 countries, conducting major orchestras such as the Sanremo Symphony, Haifa Symphony, Virtuosi del Teatro alla Scala, and Berliner Symphoniker. He has performed in prestigious venues including Teatro alla Scala, Carnegie Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Deeply connected to Astor Piazzolla’s music, he co-founded Duettango and has staged María de Buenos Aires. His discography exceeds 20 albums across leading labels.
