This album by the Gävle Symphony Orchestra under Jaime Martín features two of Max Reger’s most evocative late orchestral works: Four Tone Poems after Böcklin and the Romantic Suite. Both pieces display Reger’s lush, poetic style and hint at Impressionist influences akin to Debussy. Though once highly revered—praised by Hindemith as “the last giant of music” and championed by Schoenberg—Reger’s works are now rarely performed. Marking his 150th birth anniversary in 2023, this recording reaffirms Reger’s genius and originality, offering a compelling case for renewed appreciation of his richly textured and expressive orchestral music.

Jaime Martín (b. 1965) is a distinguished Spanish conductor and former flautist, currently Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (since 2022) and Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra through 2027. He also leads Ireland’s RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and was Artistic Director of the Gävle Symphony Orchestra (2013–2022). Initially renowned as a flautist, Martín transitioned to full-time conducting in 2013 and rapidly rose to prominence. He has conducted major orchestras worldwide, collaborated with top soloists, and championed contemporary composers. His recordings span works by Brahms, Beethoven, and Schubert, reflecting both artistic depth and a passion for musical innovation.
