De Profundis is a 20-member all-male choir dedicated to Continental Renaissance sacred music. Praised by The Guardian as “ace,” the ensemble performs under leading early music conductors and is especially celebrated in Spain, with frequent festival appearances. In 2022, De Profundis launched an ambitious project to perform and record the complete Masses and Magnificats of Cristóbal de Morales, a central figure of the Spanish Renaissance. Their first recording, Missa Mille regretz & Missa Desilde al cavallero, won a Diapason d’Or. The second volume continues the series with Morales’s five-voice Requiem Mass and the renowned Parce mihi, Domine.
Cristóbal de Morales (c. 1500–1553) was one of the three great Spanish composers of the 16th century, alongside Tomás Luis de Victoria and Francisco Guerrero. He served as maestro de capilla in Ávila, Toledo, Málaga, and Marchena, but his most influential years were with the papal choir in Rome (1535–45), where he published several collections that spread his reputation across Europe and beyond. Morales composed 21 masses, 16 of them printed in Rome under his supervision in 1544, and was the first Spaniard to set magnificats in all eight modes. His motets, widely admired, influenced contemporaries including Victoria, Guerrero, and Palestrina.
