Spunicunifait is an ensemble of five seasoned musicians, experienced both in chamber music and in leading orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Formed to focus on the in-depth study and historically informed performance of Mozart’s six string quintets, the group brings scholarly dedication to these masterpieces. Their playful name comes from a whimsical phrase—“Spuni Cuni fait”—that Mozart once wrote to his cousin Maria Anna Thekla (“Bäsle”), possibly meaning “something woven from rabbit skin,” referencing a shawl she wore in a self-portrait. The ensemble thus combines erudition with a touch of Mozartian humor in its artistic identity.
