This album unites star violinist Christian Tetzlaff with the BBC Philharmonic and conductor John Storgårds to present two landmark British violin concertos composed nearly a century apart. Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto (1910), a deeply emotional, large-scale work once neglected in the wake of modernism, is performed here with brisk tempos inspired by early recordings, highlighting its intensity and lyricism. Thomas Adès’ Concentric Paths (2005), already recognized as a modern classic, combines clarity of writing with a virtuosic solo part that fully embodies the concerto tradition. Together, the works create a compelling dialogue between past and present.

Christian Tetzlaff (b. 1966) is an internationally acclaimed violinist, praised for transformative interpretations that make familiar works feel newly discovered. Celebrated for his Beethoven Violin Concerto under Daniel Harding, he is also known for reviving overlooked masterpieces like Joachim’s concerto and premiering new works, including Jörg Widmann’s Violin Concerto. Performing around 100 concerts annually, he appears with leading orchestras worldwide and was Artist in Residence with the Berlin Philharmonic. Founder of the Tetzlaff Quartet, he also performs in chamber ensembles, earning major awards. A committed teacher at the Kronberg Academy, he plays a Peter Greiner violin and remains admired for his risk-taking artistry and depth.
