Beauty in a Moment of Chaos is the AVIE debut of Sonnambula, a New York City-based early music ensemble. The album explores how artistic beauty thrived amid the upheaval of 16th- and 17th-century Europe, when many composers concealed their identities for social, religious, or political reasons. Blending northern and southern European styles, the program features works by figures such as William Byrd, Richard Dering, Leonora Duarte, Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Alfonso Ferrabosco the elder, and Salomone Rossi—artists whose diverse backgrounds and experiences reflect resilience and creativity in an age of disruption and transformation.

Sonnambula is a New York–based, historically informed ensemble centered on the lush sound of the viol, praised by The New Yorker as “remarkable” and “superb.” Known for reviving forgotten early music, the group has performed at major venues including Alice Tully Hall, The Frick Collection, and the Indianapolis Early Music Festival. As Ensemble in Residence at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2018–2019), they created site-specific programs at The Cloisters. Their acclaimed debut album features the complete works of 17th-century composer Leonora Duarte. Deeply committed to education, Sonnambula conducts masterclasses, lectures, and collaborations with institutions like Princeton University and The Hispanic Society of America.
