Daniil Trifonov, described by The New York Times as “one of the most awesome pianists of our time,” presents a new album devoted to Tchaikovsky’s solo piano music, revealing the composer’s intimate and personal side. The recording features the Piano Sonata in C-sharp minor, a rarely heard early masterpiece full of contrasts and originality; the lyrical Thème original et variations in F major; and the charming Children’s Album, Op. 39, inspired by family life and childhood memories. The album concludes with Mikhail Pletnev’s virtuosic 1978 solo piano transcription of The Sleeping Beauty Suite, which Trifonov praises as “a masterful piano work in its own right”.

Born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1991, Daniil Trifonov began piano studies at five, later training under Tatiana Zelikman at Moscow’s Gnessin School and Sergei Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Also a composer, he writes for piano, chamber, and orchestral ensembles, premiering his own Piano Concerto to great acclaim. Trifonov gained international fame in 2010–11, winning prizes at the Chopin, Rubinstein, and Tchaikovsky Competitions, followed by Italy’s Franco Abbiati Prize in 2013. Now among the world’s foremost pianists, he performs at top venues including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and the Musikverein. His 2025–26 season features major collaborations, tours, and concerto appearances across North America and Europe.
