The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, under conductor Nicholas Collon, continues its acclaimed recording series with a new album dedicated to Richard Strauss. This release features Strauss’ final major orchestral work, the expansive Alpine Symphony, alongside Four Songs, Op. 27, performed by the renowned soprano Louise Alder. The album highlights both the orchestra’s expressive depth and Alder’s lyrical artistry, offering a fresh and compelling interpretation of Strauss’ late orchestral and vocal music.
Louise Alder (b. 1986) is a British soprano renowned for her versatility in opera, concert, and recital. A former member of Oper Frankfurt, she studied at the Royal College of Music as the inaugural Kiri Te Kanawa Scholar and has won numerous awards, including the 2017 International Opera Awards Young Singer Prize and Glyndebourne’s John Christie Award. Alder performs major operatic roles such as Donna Anna, Micaela, Contessa, and Susanna, and frequently appears in concerts with leading orchestras performing Mozart, Haydn, Mahler, and Strauss. A celebrated recitalist, she has performed internationally and recorded extensively, including French and Russian song, Strauss Lieder, and Baroque opera.
Nicholas Collon (b. 1983, London) is a British conductor, violist, pianist, and organist, trained as an Organ Scholar at Clare College, Cambridge. He is Founder and Principal Conductor of the Aurora Orchestra and has been Chief Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2021. Formerly Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest (2016–2021) and Principal Guest of the Gürzenich Orchester (2017–2022), Collon has led acclaimed performances at the BBC Proms, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and major European venues. He is noted for his contemporary repertoire, having conducted over 250 new works, and also directs opera productions including Peter Grimes, Don Giovanni, and The Turn of the Screw.
