Aaron Copland (1900–1990) was a leading American composer who developed a distinctive modern style rooted in national themes. Trained in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, he initially experimented with jazz and Neoclassicism influenced by Igor Stravinsky before shifting in the 1930s toward a simpler, more accessible style. His most celebrated works include the ballets Billy the Kid, Rodeo, and Appalachian Spring, as well as film scores and orchestral compositions. Later, he explored 12-tone techniques inspired by Arnold Schoenberg. Beyond composing, Copland was an influential teacher, writer, and conductor, shaping American musical identity.
