Alessandro Stradella (1642–1682)’s life was marked by romantic entanglements that repeatedly placed him in danger and ultimately led to his assassination in Genoa in 1682. While this dramatic fate inspired several operas, it long overshadowed his true musical gifts. A composer of remarkable melodic invention and dramatic sensitivity, Stradella excelled not only in large-scale works but also in intimate chamber cantatas. These pieces vividly portray historical and philosophical themes—from Seneca’s death to Nero’s triumph—capturing profound human emotions in concise form. Together, they reveal a composer of expressive depth whose artistry deserves recognition beyond the legend of his turbulent life.

Mauro Borgioni is an Italian baritone specializing in Baroque repertoire, trained in Perugia, Milan, and at the Fondation Royaumont. Widely sought after, he has collaborated with leading conductors including Jordi Savall and Ottavio Dantone, performing at major venues such as the Wiener Konzerthaus, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of Monteverdi, he has sung leading roles in L’Orfeo and Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria. His repertoire also spans sacred works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart, as well as Baroque opera by Vivaldi and Purcell. Active in contemporary music and recording, Borgioni maintains a diverse and internationally recognized career.
