Leo Fall (1873–1925)’s 1922 operetta presents a witty and lively story centered on Sonja, a street singer who knowingly becomes part of a social experiment. Unlike Eliza Doolittle, she willingly agrees to be transformed into an “interesting woman” as part of a wager set by an American millionaire, Brown. He seeks to secure a выгодный marriage between his daughter Mabel and the inventor George, but Mabel insists she will only agree if George can successfully elevate Sonja within three weeks. Set to charming, memorable music and a playful libretto by Lo Portem and August Neidhart, the operetta blends humor, social satire, and romance, culminating in an ironic and cheerful resolution that overturns the initial premise.

Tobias Engeli is a Swiss conductor who grew up in a musical family and initially trained as a cellist and pianist before studying conducting in Hamburg with Christof Prick. He began conducting at an early age and is now Kapellmeister at the Musikalische Komödie Leipzig and the Leipzig Opera. Known for his versatility, Engeli has worked across a wide range of repertoire, from traditional opera to contemporary premieres, pop musicals, and crossover projects. He is also deeply committed to music education, leading youth orchestras and initiatives, and since 2021 has served as Artistic Director of the Saxon Youth Orchestra.
