Wilhelm Grosz (1894–1939), a Viennese composer, conductor, and pianist, was known for his stylistic versatility and diverse musical influences. He gained early recognition with his Symphonic Variations on an Original Theme, praised for its dramatic, orchestral scope despite being written for a single instrument. His Kleine Sonate demonstrates clarity and expressive depth, while his waltz transcriptions reflect the 1930s London fascination with Johann Strauss II. Additionally, his Three Pieces, noted for their originality, were rediscovered shortly before this recording. Together, these works highlight Grosz’s adaptability and his ability to engage with both tradition and innovation.
Born in 1978 in Vienna, pianist Gottlieb Wallisch made his concert debut at age seven and performed at the Vienna Musikverein by twelve. His international career was launched in 1996 when, at seventeen, he played Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto under Yehudi Menuhin. Since then, he has performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and the Salzburg Festival, collaborating with leading conductors like Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sir Neville Marriner, and Kirill Petrenko. Wallisch has appeared with prominent orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, earning acclaim for his interpretations across Europe, Asia, and the U.S.
