This 19th volume of Joseph Haydn’s complete symphonies marks the 40th anniversary of Il Giardino Armonico, founded and conducted by Giovanni Antonini, artistic director of the Haydn 2032 project. Known for its historically informed and often provocative interpretations of Baroque repertoire—particularly Antonio Vivaldi—the ensemble has long included Haydn in its artistic focus, with Symphony No. 44 (“Funeral”) holding special significance as the first Haydn work performed by the group. The programme juxtaposes Haydn’s symphonies (Nos. 44, 52, and 108) with works by Samuel Scheidt and Arvo Pärt, creating a reflective dialogue across centuries that connects Baroque lamentation, Classical drama, and modern spiritual minimalism through themes of mourning and consolation.
Giovanni Antonini, born in 1965 in Milan, studied at the Civica Scuola di Musica and the Centre de Musique Ancienne in Geneva. He co-founded and has led the ensemble Il Giardino Armonico since 1989, performing globally. He collaborates with prominent artists such as Cecilia Bartoli, Isabelle Faust, Sol Gabetta, and Viktoria Mullova. Antonini serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Kammerorchester Basel and Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg and regularly leads major orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker and London Symphony. He has conducted opera at La Scala, Salzburg Festival, and Opernhaus Zurich, recorded for major labels, and directs the Wratislavia Cantans Festival and the Haydn 2032 project to perform and record all of Haydn’s symphonies.
