The Farther Shore showcases bassist Matthew Treviño and pianist Scott Gendel in a compelling program of contemporary American songs and arias. The recording highlights Treviño’s remarkable expressive range, as he moves seamlessly between humor, introspection, tenderness, and emotional intensity. Centered on works by both established and emerging American composers, the album explores the traditional dramatic qualities associated with the bass voice while expanding its artistic possibilities through modern perspectives and diverse musical styles. By combining emotional depth with contemporary repertoire, The Farther Shore presents a nuanced portrait of the bass voice and its evolving role in today’s vocal music landscape.
Matthew Treviño is an acclaimed bass celebrated for his versatility across opera, theater, and recording, earning praise from the San Francisco Chronicle and Opera Magazine for his rich, expressive voice. A prominent advocate for contemporary music, he has appeared on numerous modern opera recordings, including works by Carly Simon, Gordon Getty, Michael Nyman, and Robert Paterson. Treviño has performed leading bass roles with major opera companies throughout North America and Europe, including English National Opera and Opéra de Montréal. In concert, he has collaborated with distinguished orchestras and festivals, performing works by Beethoven, Mozart, Bernstein, and Verdi. A graduate of Baylor University and former member of Merola Opera Program, he now serves as Professor of Voice at University of Wisconsin–Madison, where his research focuses on contemporary repertoire and vocal pedagogy for the bass voice.
