Honoring the Roman contrapuntal tradition established by Corelli, subsequent composers expanded the concerto grosso by incorporating innovative elements. Pietro Locatelli introduced a viola to the traditional concertino trio in his Seventh Concerto and crafted an operatic, vocal-style violin line in Il pianto d’Arianna. Meanwhile, Charles Avison adapted Scarlatti harpsichord sonatas into the genre, and Giuseppe Sammartini successfully blended the French overture with Italian styles. Performing these works, the Swiss ensemble Le Moment Baroque, led by Jonathan Nubel, emphasizes a playful, unified dialogue between the concertino and ripieno, creating fluidly contrasting musical scenes that convey a profound emotional spectrum.
Based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, Le Moment Baroque is a professional early music ensemble specializing in Baroque and Classical repertoire performed on period instruments. Comprising musicians from diverse backgrounds, the ensemble performs both as a chamber group and a full orchestra. While initially established as a choral accompaniment ensemble in French-speaking Switzerland, it has evolved into a prominent independent cultural force. Le Moment Baroque features a diverse repertoire, spanning Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Sturm und Drang symphonies. The ensemble maintains regular collaborations with local cultural organizations and frequently performs at major regional music festivals.
