Born 1955 in Moscow to an artistic family, pianist Andrei Gavrilov studied under Tatyana Kestner and Lev Naumov before achieving global fame in 1974 by winning the International Tchaikovsky Competition and debuting at the Salzburg Festival. Despite early international success—including collaborations with Sviatoslav Richter—his career was temporarily derailed by Soviet political persecution and house arrest. Following his 1985 departure from the USSR, Gavrilov resumed a distinguished career, performing in major global venues alongside world-renowned orchestras and conductors. Renowned for his deeply analytical interpretations and extensive repertoire, he continues to perform, record, and offer profound insights into the classical canon.
