Violinist Patrick Yim presents Bamboo Grove, a collection of world-premiere recordings featuring works by renowned composers Chen Yi and Zhou Long. Resulting from an April 2024 residency at the University of Notre Dame, the album reflects close collaboration with the composers, whose music bridges Chinese heritage and Western compositional technique. Through extended techniques and vivid timbral colors, the violin and viola evoke traditional instruments like the guqin, erhu, pipa, and xiao. Featuring Zhou’s title track alongside Chen’s Xian Shi, Tales from the Nine Bells, and Suite for Viola and Chamber Winds, Yim offers an authoritative, virtuoso portrait of cross-cultural synthesis.
Violinist Patrick Yim earned his BM and MM with honors from the Cleveland Institute of Music under William Preucil and David Updegraff, followed by a DMA from Stony Brook University. Having debuted as a soloist with the Honolulu Symphony, Yim enjoys a multifaceted career as a performer, scholar, and contemporary music advocate. He has toured internationally with The Cleveland Orchestra, served as concertmaster for prominent Asian ensembles, and collaborated with leading chamber musicians and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. A champion of new repertoire, Yim has commissioned over fifty works and presented masterclasses worldwide. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Notre Dame.
