Inspired by Roman ruins, Richard Strauss composed his vivid symphonic poem Aus Italien, which captures scenes of Sorrento and Naples alongside his impressions of Rome. This evocative work was performed by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester under the direction of Rémy Ballot, conductor in residence at the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Complementing the orchestral tone poem, the program featured a selection of Strauss's songs for soprano and orchestra performed by German soprano Joo-Anne Bitter. Internationally recognized for her acclaimed interpretations of Richard Wagner, Bitter delivered a compelling performance that further highlighted the rich, expressive beauty of Strauss's musical legacy.
German soprano Joo-Anne Bitter is widely recognized for her interpretations of lyric-dramatic Wagnerian and Strauss roles. Her acclaimed repertoire features key operatic portrayals, including Elsa in Lohengrin, Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, and the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, alongside significant orchestral songs by Richard Strauss. A regular guest at major German opera houses and international orchestra venues, she collaborates with leading conductors worldwide to refine her vocal artistry. Furthermore, Bitter maintains a strong commitment to non-profit and charitable engagements, building a distinguished reputation as a socially dedicated artist.
Rémy Ballot (born 1977 in Paris) is a French violinist and conductor noted for his dual career in performance and orchestral leadership. He studied violin at the Paris Conservatoire with Gérard Poulet and received artistic guidance from Ivry Gitlis, while also serving as the last pupil of Sergiu Celibidache. Ballot founded his own orchestra in Paris and later established himself internationally, particularly through acclaimed live recordings of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies. As founder of Klangkollektiv Wien and conductor-in-residence for the Richard Strauss Days, he has developed a strong profile in Austro-German repertoire. He also maintains an active career as a violinist in chamber music and orchestral collaborations.
