In her album no crown!, Baroque harp specialist Margret Koell commemorates Queen Christina of Sweden, who abdicated in 1654 to become a paramount arts patron in Rome. Drawing from Christina's favored operatic and chamber repertoire, Koell reimagines works by Froberger, Buxtehude, Cesti, Marazzoli, Rossi, and Pasquini into a solo triple harp performance. Structured as an instrumental "opera without words", complete with an overture, acts, interludes, and a finale, the album delivers a dramatic narrative that brings listeners close to one of the 17th century's most captivating historical figures.
Renowned globally as a historical harp authority, Margret Koell excels as a soloist, chamber artist, ensemble director, and principal harpist for groups like Il Giardino Armonico and Accademia Bizantina. Her career spans performances at top international venues, such as La Scala and the Elbphilharmonie, and an extensive discography featuring award-winning solo albums like L’arpa di Partenope. Alongside her classical and contemporary performance career, Koell founded Harfenlabor in 2016 to advance historical harp research and education. She also serves as artistic director of the Harp Biennale Innsbruck, where she regularly curates festivals and initiates new works for historical instruments.
