Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) was an Italian composer celebrated for bringing Russian orchestral color and Strauss-like harmonic intensity into Italian music. Trained in Bologna and under Rimsky-Korsakov, he gained mastery of orchestration and composition. His early works, including Re Enzo and Semirama, earned him recognition and a professorship at the St. Cecilia Academy in Rome, where he later served as director. Respighi is best remembered for his Roman tone poems—Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome, and Roman Festivals—as well as Church Windows, The Birds, and arrangements of early Italian and Rossini works. His operas had modest success, with Belfagor and La fiamma notable among them.
