Timo Ruottinen (born 30 December 1947, Tampere) is a Finnish composer, musician, and music producer, best known to the public for creating the theme and “Pikku Kakkonen posti” song for Yle TV2’s children’s program Pikku Kakkonen. Active as a composer and performer since the 1960s, his most notable early work is the 1969 pop mass Missa Popularis. From 1993 to 2015, Ruottinen served as CEO and executive producer of Alba Records, later becoming its board chairman. His career spans popular, sacred, and choral music, reflecting both creative versatility and a lasting influence on Finnish musical culture.

Ruottinen’s Uspenie (All-Night Vigil) was composed over four decades (1984–2019), with some early movements performed and recorded before the full version’s completion for the 150th anniversary of Helsinki’s Uspenski Cathedral in 2018. While individual sections of the Orthodox Vigil have inspired composers like Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and in Finland Einojuhani Rautavaara, full settings remain rare. Ruottinen’s work is a through-composed piece tailored for Finnish worship, balancing artistic richness with the technical capabilities of its performers. Spanning diverse styles yet rooted in Orthodox musical tradition, it reflects a long, patient creative process and a deep engagement with sacred choral heritage.
