The Pavel Haas Quartet, among today’s leading chamber ensembles, continues its long-standing exploration of Bohuslav Martinů’s string quartets with a recording of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th. These works trace over two decades of the composer’s creativity: the breakthrough Second, the experimental Third, the emotionally charged Fifth (Paris, 1938), and the post-war Seventh (New York, 1947), marked by lyrical, Dvořákian warmth. Renowned for their vibrant tone, nuanced interplay, and expressive depth, the Pavel Haas Quartet brings fresh intensity to Martinů’s music, capturing both its experimentation and its intimate, poetic spirit, and reaffirming the composer’s profound affinity for the quartet form.
The Pavel Haas Quartet, based in Prague and named after the Czech-Jewish composer Pavel Haas, is celebrated worldwide for its rich sound, passion, and electrifying performances. Since winning the 2005 Paolo Borciani competition, they have become regulars at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the Vienna Musikverein. Acclaimed by critics and honored with numerous awards, they record exclusively for Supraphon, earning five Gramophone Awards, including Recording of the Year in 2011. In 2022, for their 20th anniversary, they were hailed by BBC Music Magazine as one of the ten greatest string quartets of all time.
