In the second installment of Ludwig van Beethoven’s complete piano works as recorded by pianist Alfredo Perl, the focus shifts to compositions from the composer’s so-called “classical” period (1801–1814). This collection brings together sonatas, variations, bagatelles, and individual piano pieces that demonstrate Beethoven’s growing expressive depth and technical innovation. These works mark a pivotal stage in the evolution of piano literature, combining structural clarity with increasing emotional intensity and virtuosic demands. Perl’s interpretation highlights both the formal sophistication and the expanding dramatic scope of Beethoven’s writing, offering a cohesive view of a transformative phase in the composer’s artistic development and in the broader history of keyboard music.
Alfredo Perl, born in Santiago in 1965, is an internationally acclaimed pianist who began his training with Carlos Botto before continuing his studies with Günter Ludwig in Cologne and Maria Curcio in London. Since his debut at the age of nine, he has developed a major international career, performing in leading venues such as the Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, the Musikverein, and the Sydney Opera House, as well as at major festivals across Europe. He has collaborated with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and is widely recognized for his interpretations of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Liszt. Alongside his performing career, Perl serves as a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold and has contributed significantly to recorded piano literature, including landmark Beethoven cycles.
