Selim Palmgren was a highly regarded pianist-composer in the period preceding the First World War, known for his extensive and stylistically diverse catalogue of piano works, much of which remains underperformed. His output spans virtuosic concert pieces, character miniatures, études, and waltzes, often reflecting influences of Impressionism, Nordic musical traditions, and Chopinesque lyricism. This repertoire is highlighted in an acclaimed recording series performed by Jouni Somero, a leading interpreter of Palmgren’s music today. The volume features demanding works such as the Fantasie, Op. 6, alongside shorter pieces that demonstrate both technical brilliance and expressive charm rooted in early 20th-century pianistic style.

Jouni Somero (born 1963)is an award-winning Finnish pianist recognized for an exceptionally active international career, having performed more than 3,500 concerts worldwide. Trained in Switzerland and at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, he also studied under notable mentors including György Cziffra and Michael Ponti. After early professional work in Germany, he has since focused exclusively on a concert career. Somero’s extensive discography includes over 110 recordings for major labels such as Naxos and Sony BMG, featuring both standard repertoire and rare works, including world premiere recordings of neglected composers. He is particularly known for championing lesser-known piano literature, completing cycles by composers such as Bortkiewicz and Tchaikovsky, and for his widely viewed online performances.
