Sumi Jo is a celebrated South Korean lyric coloratura soprano renowned for her virtuoso performances in the bel canto repertoire and her Grammy Award-winning recordings. Born in 1962 in Changwon, she studied music in South Korea before continuing vocal training at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Her international breakthrough came after being discovered by conductor Herbert von Karajan, who praised her voice as “a voice from above.” Jo has performed at many of the world’s leading opera houses, including La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, and is especially admired for roles such as the Queen of the Night and Lucia di Lammermoor. She has also contributed significantly to promoting Korean culture internationally.
