The Encyclopédie de l’orgue is regarded as one of the most ambitious recording projects of the LP era, documenting nearly five centuries of organ music through performances on historic instruments by leading virtuosos. Directed by Olivier Alain, the landmark series remains a defining achievement of the Erato catalogue. To mark its reissue, recordings by renowned Italian organist Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini are being released digitally, focusing on Italian Baroque repertoire from Girolamo Frescobaldi to Domenico Scarlatti. The collection also highlights the innovative sonatas of Bernardo Pasquini, including performances for two organs featuring Marie-Claire Alain. Additional volumes from the series are scheduled for future release.
Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini (1929–2017) was an influential Italian organist, harpsichordist, composer, and scholar renowned for his contributions to early music performance and the preservation of historic keyboard traditions. Born in Bologna in 1929, he studied at the conservatories of Bologna and Paris and later earned a doctorate from the University of Padua with research focused on Johann Sebastian Bach. Tagliavini enjoyed an international concert career and became a leading authority on Baroque organ and harpsichord performance, collaborating with figures such as Marie-Claire Alain and Gustav Leonhardt.
