Michael Tilson Thomas (1944–2026) was an iconic American conductor, composer, pianist, and educator whose legacy profoundly shaped modern classical music. Trained under Ingolf Dahl and mentored by legends like Igor Stravinsky, he held principal leadership roles with the London Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony, where he served as Music Director for 25 years. A pioneer in orchestral education, MTT co-founded the New World Symphony in 1987 and championed American composers alongside his acclaimed Mahler cycles. Also a celebrated composer of works like From the Diary of Anne Frank, he bridged musical genres and introduced generations to orchestral literature through television and media.
