_____________________

John W. Duarte (1919–2004) was a British composer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist whose career bridged chemistry and music. Trained as a chemist, he turned fully to music in 1969, encouraged by Len Williams. Mostly self-taught aside from jazz guitar lessons with Terry Usher, he also played trumpet and double bass, performing with figures like Coleman Hawkins and Django Reinhardt. Duarte’s works span Renaissance-inspired styles, aleatory and atonal experimentation, tonal folk-influenced idioms, and romantic lyricism. A keen admirer of American music, he drew on folk, jazz, blues, and musical theatre. His Americana reflects this diversity, with works based on folk songs, jazz, blues, and Gershwin.
